Lady Rams Fall Short in Opener
MOBILE, Ala—the University of Mobile women’s soccer team opened the season with a tough match-up versus #2 ranked Martin Methodist, but the young Lady Rams never let the ball game get away from them.
The teams played to a scoreless tie through the first 31:09, thanks in large part to a brilliant save by true freshman Susanne Klungtveit, when she dropped to the ground and came through with a kick-save on a shot from point-blank range by Amanda Johansson at the 20:38 mark.
But the Red Hawks continued to be aggressive, taking 22 shots in the game, and at the 13:51 mark, Sara Perrigan took a feed from sub Shannon Walter inside the box and knocked it into the net.
That goal was all the scoring in the sweltering first half, and the second half was pretty much the same. Martin Methodist continued to force the issue on offense and Walter did it herself at the 28:40 mark when she took the ball down field and went top shelf for the final goal of the game.
The Red Hawks out-shot Mobile 22-13, including a 9-3 edge in shots on goal. Mobile’s best scoring chance came early in the second frame when Terri McCreadie made a couple of moves to free herself from defenders, only to have her shot deflected away by goalie Karen Carmack.
McCreadie finished with 2 shots on goal and 5 shots overall. The Lady Rams fall to 0-1 on the season and next play at Reinhardt college in Waleska, GA August 28th at 2:00 pm. |
