Rams to host Belhaven College in first
game of Homecoming doubleheader
MOBILE, Ala. -- Fresh off a 1-0 blanking of conference rival William
Carey College on Tuesday night at home in The Jungle, the Rams get set
to welcome their second conference opponent in a row, when Mobile squares
off against Belhaven College (4-1-0) on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 p.m.
in the first game of a Homecoming doubleheader.
In four games this season, the Rams have yet to allow a goal, outscoring
their opponents, 16-0 on the season. Sophomore goalkeeper, Ingibjorg
Johanessdottir, has started all four games for Mobile and made 14 saves.
While not cracking the national top 25, the UM Rams held steady to their
number five ranking in the Region (XIII) behind Lee University (11-1-0),
Auburn University-Montgomery (7-1-0), Thomas University (3-3-0) and Berry
College (7-2-0).
While the Rams and Blazers have yet to meet this season, the two teams
have played two common opponents. Missouri Baptist College knocked off
Belhaven, 3-2, back on Sept. 3 and three days later played to a 0-0 tie
Mobile.
Both teams have also already played conference opponent, William Carey
College, with Belhaven winning, 6-2, and Mobile winning, 1-0.
So far through four games, freshman, Sunniva Haaland, has led the Mobile
offensive attack. Haaland, who scored the game-winner on Tuesday night
with a penalty kick in the 57th minute, leads the team with five goals
scored on the season.
Having played just four games in the month of September, the Rams enter
a brutal part of their schedule, playing 11 games in the month of October.
Hurricane Ivan disrupted play in September, canceling one game with
Division I, Nicholls State University and postponing two other matches.
Mobile was originally scheduled to play Belhaven in Jackson, Mississippi
back on Sept. 18, but that game was rescheduled to Tuesday, Oct. 12 at
3 p.m.
Also, Mobile’s game with Thomas University originally scheduled
for Sept. 23 has also been postponed until Monday, Oct. 4 at 7 p.m.
