Lady Rams Soccer Advances To Postseason

MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's soccer team will participate in the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference Tournament this weekend, after taking down Belhaven College 2-1 in Wednesday night's play-in game.

While both teams played to a scoreless tie at halftime, the Lady Blazers could have easily been up 1-0 or 2-0. Despite the Lady Rams winning the shot battle 12-5 in the opening frame, Belhaven got a pair of point-blank looks. Thankfully for the Lady Rams, goalkeeper Susanne Klungtveit was up to the challenge, stoning Sharon Warden and Dana Sullivan on a pair of shots from inside the box.

Then, in the 2nd half, the Lady Blazers struck first as Warden collected a loose ball in the 18-yard box and knocked it home for the 1-0 lead with 26:52 left to play.

Mobile battled back, and 9 minutes later Camilla Hovden was fouled in the box to set up a penalty kick and golden opportunity to knot the game. Hovden took the freebie and knocked it home under the diving kicker to make the score 1-1.

After that, things looked bleak for Mobile. Coley Normand picked up a red card with 15:38 left to play, and Hovden did the same with 10 minutes left, meaning the Lady Rams were two players short for the final 10 minutes.

The Lady Rams defense held its own in that time period, keeping the Lady Blazers from getting a look on goal, and then turned things over to the offense and leading goal scorer Terri McCreadie with just 2 minutes remaining.

McCreadie took the ball just across the midfield stripe, raced down the middle of the field, and right before a pack of Belhaven defenders could converge on her outside the box, McCreadie unleashed a rocket just inside the left post for the game-winner.

The win moves Mobile to 3-11-2 on the season, and the team will face William Carey at 3:30 on Friday, October 26th in the opening round of the GCAC Tournament.
