Women’s Soccer Falls to Lambuth College 5-4 in Double Overtime

JACKSON, Tenn. – Despite being forced to play without four of their starters (three for disciplinary actions after breaking team rules and one with an injury), the University of Mobile overcame three deficits and rallied to tie the game time and time again before eventually losing to Lambuth College 5-4 in double-overtime Friday afternoon in Jackson, TN.

Amber Guillory scored on a direct free kick in the 90th minute to send the game into overtime and again in the 117th minute off the same set play, to give the Lady Eagles their first win of the season.

After falling behind 1-0 just seven seconds into the game, Mobile responded two minutes later on a goal from freshman Kelly Baltieri.  Baltieri received a pass from teammate Jemma Connor in the center of the 18-yard box and fired a ground shot into the right corner of the net.

“After having a goal scored on them seven seconds into the game, the girls could have quit, but they didn’t and scored just two minutes later,” said UM head coach Uwe Tittl.    “When we got behind, we kept fighting and it was evident.”

With the score knotted 1-1 at halftime, Lambuth opened the second half scoring in 66th minute when forward Laura Harrison scored the first of her two goals on the afternoon.  After receiving the ball about 40 yards away from the goal, Harrison turned and broke away beating the UM goalkeeper one vs. one with a shot into the left corner of the net.

Mobile answered the call when freshman Rose Clemensen picked up her fifth goal of the season off a deflected shot from teammate Jemma Connor.  Connor, who recorded three assists in the game, took a direct kick from right outside 35 yards that hit the crossbar.  Clemensen, who was in the right place at the right time, was able to guide the ball into the back of the net pulling Mobile even at 2-2.

Trailing 3-2, junior Kathryn Morgan netted her second goal of the season bringing Mobile back even for the third time.  Morgan, who was substituted into the game just a minute earlier, made an immediate impact as she was on the receiving end of a two versus one breakaway.  Baltieri, who had scored earlier in the game, took a shot at Lambuth goalkeeper Laura Carney that was blocked and ended up in the direction of Morgan, who followed up the deflection and fired into the open net.

Mobile took their first lead of the game in the 85th minute when Baltieri headed in her second goal of the day off a corner kick from Connor.  However, the Rams were unable to hang on to their lead as Lambuth fought back and sent the game into overtime.  After missing several opportunities in overtime to win the game, the Rams fatigue caught up with them allowing the final goal of the afternoon seven minutes into the second overtime.

UM (3-3) will again be without four starters when they return to action on Saturday when the team travels to Bethel College for a 1:00 p.m. showdown.
