Lady Rams Fall Short To Rivals
MOBILE, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's tennis team dropped a tough 5-4 match at the Mobile Tennis Center Wednesday to cross-town rival Spring Hill College.
The Lady Rams, with 4 holdovers from last season's team that qualified for the NAIA National Tournament, led 2-1 after doubles action.
The team of Josy Soares and Claudia Borges took down Alli Symulevich and Abbey Augelle 8-5, and the duo of Mayra Leal and Pam Boykin teamed up to defeat Catherine Thames and Paige Malone 9-7. Spring Hill salvaged one doubles match when the Lady Rams' Michelle Machen and Camilla Hovden fell to Lynne Fritscher and Alex Tovar 3-8.
Mobile started out solid in singles action, with #1 and #2 Soares and Borges dominating Symulevich and Thames by identical scores of 6-0, 6-1 to give the Lady Rams a nice 4-1 cushion, with only 1 more point needed for the match victory.
But, the #3, #4, #5 and #6's for Spring Hill swept the match, with Fritscher dropping Machen 6-2, 6-1 and Malone defeating Leal 6-3, 6-0 just seconds apart to ice the match. In other singles action, Boykin fell to Augelle 6-1, 6-2 and Ashley Hall fell 6-2, 6-1 to Tovar.
Mobile falls to 0-1 overall and 0-1 in GCAC action.
