UM Women Pick Up Pair of Wins

JACKSON, Miss-- The University of Mobile women's tennis team improved to 3-1 with Gulf Coast Athletic Conference victories at Belhaven and Tougaloo Saturday.

In the opener, the Lady Rams took down Belhaven 8-1, with the only Lady Blazer point coming by default due to sickness.

Mobile dominated doubles action, winning the three matches by a combined score of 24-2. Josey Soares and Claudia Borges teamed up to win 8-2, Pam Boykin and Mayra Leal won 8-0, and Michelle Machen and Camilla Hovden capped the doubles action with another 8-0 victory.

In singles action, Borges cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory; Boykin and Leal skunked their respective opponents 6-0, 6-0; Machen rallied for a 7-5, 6-0 win; and Hovden picked up a 6-1, 6-4 victory.

Against Tougaloo, Mobile rolled to a 5-0 win that was cut short due to a late start.

The teams of Soares/Borges, Boykin/Ashley Hall, and Machen/Hovden all won 8-0 to set the tone, and then the singles action followed the same storyline.

Borges won 6-0, 6-0 and Hovden won 6-0, 6-0 to complete the full shutout of the Bulldogs.

The Lady Rams are 3-1 overall and 3-1 in GCAC action and next play in the Bash at the Beach March 10-11 in Gulf Shores. They will battle Shorter College, LeTourneau and Transylvania in the two-day event.
