Lady Rams Go 2-1 in Tournament

MOBILE, Ala-- The UM women's tennis team shutout NCAA Div III Transylvania University to move to 5-2 on the season and go 2-1 in the Bash at the Beach.

After the final day of the tournament was pushed from Tuesday in Gulf Shores to Wednesday on the UM campus due to rain, the Lady Rams impressed in front of the home crowd. Mobile dominated throughout, as the visitors never got to 3 points in any of the 9 matches.

Mobile set the tempo by sweeping through doubles action by a combined score of 24-1. The teams of Josy Soares/ Claudia Borges and Michelle Machen/ Camilla Hovden won 8-0, and Pam Boykin/ Mayra Leal teamed up for an 8-1 win.

In singles action, Soares and Borges won their matches by scores of 6-2, 6-0; Boykin won 6-1, 6-2; Machen and Leal won by scores of 6-1, 6-0; and Hovden shutout her foe 6-0, 6-0.

The Lady Rams (5-2) play at home Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Mobile hosts NCAA Div II's University of Montevallo at 3:00 pm and then hosts GCAC foe Belhaven Saturday at 9:00 am.

Day One:

GULF SHORES, Ala-- The University of Mobile women's tennis team competed in UM's first "Bash at the Beach" in Gulf Shores and Mobile.

The Lady Rams started the tournament by cruising to an 8-0 victory over NCAA Div III LeTourneau University. The duos of Josy Soares/ Claudia Borges, Pam Boykin/ Mayra Leal, and Camilla Hovden/Michelle Machen started the day off right by sweeping the doubles action.

In singles play, Mobile finished the job as Soares, Borges, Leal, Machen and Hovden all picked up victories.

Mobile then ran into 13th-ranked Shorter College and fell 6-0 to drop to 4-2 on the season.

The Lady Rams face Transylvania Wednesday at 11:00 am at the Univ of Mobile tennis facilities to finish the tournament. Weather forced the match to be moved from Tuesday to Wednesday. Spring Hill will face LeTourneau at 2:00 pm at UM Wednesday.
