UM Tennis Avenges Loss, Defeats Spring Hill

MOBILE, Ala. -- The University of Mobile women's tennis team defeated Spring Hill College 5-2 Wednesday night after losing 3-6 at Spring Hill earlier this season.

"It's a big win, we're on a roll right now," Head Coach Uwe Tittl said of the victory that moves the Lady Rams' match win streak to 5 in a row.

In doubles action, the Lady Rams did not fare so well, falling into a 1-2 hole before singles play started. Lindsey McDaniel and Maria Aguirre, and Camilla Hovden and Michelle Machen each fell 4-8. Josey Soares and Pam Boykin delivered the only doubles win for Mobile, an 8-2 victory.

Singles action saw the Lady Rams make a comeback. Soares continued to roll with a 6-0, 6-1 win, while Aguirre picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory. McDaniel dominated 6-0, 6-0. After those 3 were finished, the Lady Rams held a 4-2 edge and needed 1 more victory to take the match.

Boykin and Hovden were both down 1 set, but Machen rose to the occasion and picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory that moved Mobile to 9-3 on the season.

"We knew coming in that we needed to win and it didn't matter how," Coach Tittl said. "Michelle Machen came through big for us."

The Lady Rams move to 4-2 in the conference, behind 1st place Xavier University, who sits at 5-0. Mobile hosts Belhaven College Friday, March 30th at 9:00 AM.
