UM Tennis Falls Short at #11 Xavier University

NEW ORLEANS, Louis-- The University of Mobile women's tennis team fell just shy at #11 Xavier University, falling 5-4. The match locks in Xavier as the #1 seed in the upcoming GCAC Tournament, while the Lady Rams have secured the #2 seed.

Mobile earned forfeits at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles because Xavier's Dominique Bell missed her fifth consecutive match following her brother's death.

Mobile (10-4, 5-3) also got points at No. 2 doubles, when Soares and Pam Boykin rallied to defeat McArthur and Mughnee 9-7, and from Aguirre's 6-4, 6-2 victory against Alexandra Broussard at No. 5 singles.

Freshman Angelina Callis clinched the Gold Nuggets' fifth point of the dual with a 7-5, 6-1 decision against Josey Soares at No. 1 singles. Callis trailed 5-3 before saving a set point and winning 10 of the final 11 games.

Yuliem Dominguez, Colleen McArthur and Jihanna Mughnee also won singles matches for Xavier (11-6 overall, 6-0 GCAC) by a combined score of 36-6. Callis and Dominguez defeated Maria Aguirre and Lindsey McDaniel 8-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Xavier will play Belhaven or Tougaloo in the GCAC Tournament semifinals at 3 p.m. on April 13 at City Park. Mobile will be the No. 2 seed and play No. 3 Spring Hill at 9 a.m. that day in the other semifinal. The championship match is scheduled for 10 a.m. on April 14, and the winner will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA Region XIII Tournament at UNO on April 20-22.
