Mobile Women Win GCAC Tournament
But, the delays could not stop Mobile, as the Lady Rams upset 14th-ranked Xavier University 5-4 to take home the GCAC Championship and end Xavier's streak of five consecutive GCAC titles. Earlier in the day, Mobile defeated Spring Hill to clinch the host bid to the NAIA National Tournament which begins May 12th at the Mobile Tennis Center. Michelle Machen and Camilla Hovden clinched the championship with an 8-6 victory over Alexandra Broussard and Melissa DeLoach at No. 3 doubles. Machen and Hovden are 3-0 this season against Broussard and DeLoach, winning each time by two games. Other doubles action saw Pam Boykin and Mayra Leal work together for an 8-2 and the duo of Josy Soares/Claudia Borges fall 1-8. In singles action, Borges won 6-3, 4-3; Leal cruised 6-0, 6-0 and Camilla Hovden battled for a 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 (1) victory. Soares fell 1-6, 3-6; Boykin lost 1-6, 0-6; and Machen fell 0-6, 0-6. The win by the Lady Rams (12-4) secures them a spot at the Region XIII Tournament next weekend in Rome, GA. Semifinals: Mobile 5 - SHC 1 The Lady Rams toppled the Lady Badgers 5-1 to take the season series against the rival Lady Badgers 2-1. The Lady Rams took the #1 and #2 doubles to take a 2-1 lead heading into singles play and then the the Lady Rams finished things off from there. Josy Soares/Claudia Borges teamed up for an 8-0 victory and Mayra Leal/Pam Boykin fought for an 8-5 victory. Machen/Hovden fell 5-8 for Mobile. Singles action saw Soares win 6-1, 6-0; Borges win 6-1, 6-0 and Leal walk away victorious 6-1, 6-0. The Lady Rams move to 11-4 on the season and will face Xavier Friday night.
