Women's tennis bounced from NAIA national tournament
MOBILE, Ala. -- The University of Mobile (14-5) was
eliminated from the women’s tennis NAIA national tournament with
7-2 loss to Lewis & Clark State College Monday afternoon at the
Mobile Tennis Center in Mobile, Alabama.
Mobile, which ends their regular
season at 14-5, jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead early in the match
when the doubles pair of Margot Wallace
and Tiffany Williams won their match on court number one, 8-6.
Trailing
5-3, Wallace and Williams made a furious comeback to win five of
the next six games to take the match and give Mobile a 1-0 lead.
However,
the team of Tiffany Crenshaw and Maria Aguirre as well as the team
of Lindsey McDaniel and Cristen Gracey both dropped 8-3 decisions
on courts two and three as Lewis & Clark pulled ahead 2-1 going
into singles action.
The Rams needed to win four of the six singles
matches in order to advance to the second round and unfortunately for
Mobile, that wouldn’t
be the case.
However, the Rams would get one victory in singles action
as Williams defeated Maria Resende 4-6, 6-2, 10-8 on court number
two for the Rams
only singles victory.
Lewis & Clark State College will move on to
the second round where they will face Shorter College, tomorrow, May
17 at 1 p.m. at the Mobile
Tennis Center.
