UM Names Head Coach for Cross Country Programs
MOBILE, Ala—The University of Mobile has announced that Holly Person will take over as head coach of the recently reinstated men’s and women’s cross country teams.
Person, who ran cross country at West Valley High School in Fairbanks, Alaska, takes over two programs that made a combined 19 trips to the NAIA National Championships, but were cut after the 2003-04 season due to budgetary concerns.
“I’m definitely excited about the opportunity to bring this program back,” Person said. “I always look forward to a challenge and I cannot wait to see what the new athletes can bring. We want to build up our name where it was in the past and further.”
The University of Mobile alumnus earned a B.A. in art in 2005 and gained coaching experience by working various soccer camps and clubs. While running cross country in high school, she was close to her coach and picked up an important trait among successful coaches.
“Working with my coach in high school, I could see the passion he had for the athletes and I believe that I can carry that here to help them reach their goals,” Person said.
She also knows that while wins and losses are important, it’s the impact you make on an athlete’s life that defines a successful program.
“I like to connect with people on a personal level,” Person said. “I’m excited about getting involved with the student athletes and being a positive role model in their lives.”
The teams will begin competition in early September.
