Hinson Lecture Series Brings Author, Essay Winners to Campus

Dr. George C. Rable, professor of history at the University of Alabama, autographs a copy of one of his books for University of Mobile students following his address during the third annual Billy G. Hinson Lecture Series at the University of Mobile on March 27. The Alabama Humanities Foundation was a co-sponsor of the lecture, which honors history professor Dr. Hinson, chair of the UM Department of Social & Behavioral Sciences.

Rable’s topic was “God as General: Was There a Religious History of the American Civil War?” Pictured from left are UM senior social science majors Crystal Wilkinson of Satsuma and Lyndon Fleming of Mobile.

During the event, Satsuma High School winners of the 2008 Historical Essay Competition sponsored by the university in conjunction with the lecture series. The students are members of the advanced placement history class taught by Satsuma H.S. teacher and UM graduate Kevin Rawls. They wrote on the importance of historical preservation.
