University of Mobile’s RamTonz and RamBunctious Win Competitions Two University of Mobile quartets, RamTonz and Rambunctious, have won regional competitions and will represent the Christian university in international contests this summer. Both are among more than 21 contemporary and classical performing ensembles in the Christian university’s Center for Performing Arts which is under the direction of Roger Breland, a member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and founder of TRUTH, one of the first award-winning contemporary Christian recording artists. The University of Mobile RamTonz, a traditional barbershop quartet, was named the 2009 Dixie Collegiate Quartet Champions. RamTonz will compete in the Barbershop Harmony Society’s international competition in Anaheim, Calif., June 28-July 5. The group competed in the 2009 Dixie District College Quartet Finals in Winston-Salem, N.C., March 20-21. Another University of Mobile quartet, the Ramtastic 4, received fourth place in the Dixie District competition.
RamTonz members are Andrew Lowe, lead; Luke Veazey, tenor; James Berrian, baritone; and Scotty Lawrence, bass. This is the second year these particular students have performed and competed together, having won second place in the 2008 Dixie District competition. Since the ensemble was created in 2006, RamTonz has won the Dixie Collegiate Quartet Championship twice and earned second place twice .
Members of Ramtastic 4 earned fourth place at the district competition after practicing together only two months. They are Nick Weaver, lead; Paul Henley, tenor; Nick Denton, baritone; and Tyler Yawn, bass.
The University of Mobile Rambunctious, a Young Women in Harmony group, was named the 2009 Sweet Adelines International, Heart of Dixie Region 23, Rising Stars of the South. The group competed in the 2009 Sweet Adelines International, Heart of Dixie Region 23, Rising Stars of the South competition on March 23 in Chattanooga, Tenn. The next competition will be at the Sweet Adelines International Convention in Nashville, Tenn., Oct. 20 – 24. Rambunctious members are Maggie Woodlief, lead; Nikki Ellis, bass; Tiffani Tallent, tenor; and Brittany Norris, baritone The groups are directed by Dr. Al Miller, associate dean of the UM Center for Performing Arts, and vocal coach Bron Dixon of Mobile, Ala., whose now-retired Sweet Adelines quartet, Bron’s Tones, won first place in the 1971 Sweet Adelines International Championship. The University of Mobile is a Christian university affiliated with the Alabama Baptist State Convention.
