University of Mobile Chamber Orchestra Concert Features Works for Violin, Trumpet, Piano

The University of Mobile Center for Performing Arts presents the UM Chamber Orchestra in concert Thursday, April 23 at 7 p.m. Works by Vivaldi, Torelli and Saint-Saens will be performed during the free concert at College Park Baptist Church, 5860 College Pkwy., across from the university campus.

For information, call the UM Center for Performing Arts at (251) 442-2420.

The program includes works from several disciplines and features students from the Christian university, along with professional musicians.

Performing Antonio Vivaldi’s “Concerto for Violins” will be students in the university’s growing strings program. Featured will be violinists and music majors Elizabeth Steffanetta, a junior from Safety Harbor, Fla.; Ellie Thomas, a junior from Pensacola, Fla.; Chelsea Sims, a sophomore from Elberta, Ala.; and cellist Taylor Nelson, a homeschooled student from Mobile.

The strings players have performed in the UM Center for Performing Arts “Saviour” concert and will appear in the UM Opera Theater production of “The Barber of Seville.”

Guiseppe Torelli’s “Concerto in D Major for Trumpet” will feature a solo by Brad Threadgill, a member of the university’s elite RamCorps drum and bugle corps. A senior majoring in music from Creola, Ala., Threadgill also performs with the University of Mobile Wind Ensemble.

Award-winning pianists Breanne Burleson, a sophomore from Satsuma, Ala., and Lindsey Gay, a junior from Headland, Ala., will perform “The Carnival of the Animals” by Camille Saint-Saens. This piece for two pianos and orchestra is a collection of delightful depictions of different animals as portrayed in the music and brought to life by the performers. A narration between sections informs the audience of what kind of animal they can expect to hear.

Narrator for the “carnival” is Lucas Scott Lawrence, a senior majoring in music/vocal performance from Hiram, Ga.
