UM Center for Performing Arts
MOBILE, Ala. – The University of Mobile Center for Performing Arts 2006-07 calendar is filled with exciting events. This year approximately 300 students are involved in CPA programs, which include an emphasis on both classical and contemporary music. Roger Breland, director of the CPA, said the program is attracting students from throughout the nation as its reputation spreads.
UM ensembles perform locally each week at schools, civic events and churches, and tour throughout the southeast during fall and spring breaks. In addition to student and faculty recitals and additional events which are yet to be finalized, upcoming CPA performances include the following:
- Upper Room Dinner Theatre production of “Fiddler on the Roof.” Limited number of tickets available for the popular dinner theatre, located on the second floor of Martin Hall on the University of Mobile campus. Dinner shows $30, 6:30 p.m., Sept. 21, 22,-23, 29, 30 and Oct. 2. Dessert shows $18, 2 p.m., Sept. 23, 24 and 30. Box Office hours are weekdays 9:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., 251-442-2383. The Upper Room Dinner Theatre is under the direction of Dianne Murphree, professor of theatre.
- “Saviour: A Story of God’s Passion for His People,” a modern oratorio presented by the University Singers, soloists and orchestra, Sept. 26, 7 p.m., at Dauphin Way Baptist Church. Free admission. Conducted by Dr. Al Miller, senior academic fellow and assistant professor of music. Info: UM Center for Performing Arts, 251-442-2420.
- UM Piano Ensemble featuring UM students and faculty, four grand pianos on stage and up to 16 hands playing simultaneously, Oct. 3, 7:30 p.m., Moorer Auditorium on the UM campus. Free admission. Program includes pieces by Mozart, Schubert, Bach, Bizet, Grieg and Gershwin. Info: UM Center for Performing Arts, 251-442-2420.
- The UM Chamber Orchestra featuring soloist Melba Brown, associate professor of applied music and director of vocal studies, Nov. 9, 7 p.m., at College Park Baptist Church in Saraland. Free admission. Concertmaster is Elizabeth French, professor of biology, and pianist is Becky Fox, associate professor of applied music. Info: UM Center for Performing Arts, 251-442-2420.
- The UM Opera Workshop will present “Amahl and the Night Visitors” Nov. 17 and 18. Location and time to be announced. Guest conductor will be Bernard McDonald of London, England, who conducted “Amahl” for the Opera Theatre of Pittsburgh in 2005 and served as chorus master of Glyndebourne, the No. 2 opera company in the United Kingdom, from 2003-2005. - UM’s popular “Christmas Spectacular,” which has attracted standing-room-only audiences of more than 2,000 in previous years, will be expanded to two nights, Nov. 28 and 29, 6:30 p.m., at Dauphin Way Baptist Church. - “Ten Little Indians,” Upper Room Dinner Theatre. Limited number of tickets available for the popular dinner theatre, located on the second floor of Martin Hall on the University of Mobile campus. - The UM Chamber Orchestra will perform Feb. 15, 7 p.m. at College Park Baptist Church in Saraland, 7 p.m. Free admission, directed by Randy Davis, assistant professor of music. The Chamber Orchestra is a 40-member orchestra comprised of UM students, community members and professional musicians. Info: UM Center for Performing Arts, 251-442-2420.
- The Sounds of Mobile will perform aboard a cruise ship in the Mediterranean on a “Footsteps of Paul” tour March 10-17.
- The UM Piano Ensemble will present a concert featuring students and faculty on March 20, 7:30 p.m., Moorer Auditorium, University of Mobile campus. Info: UM Center for Performing Arts, 251-442-2420.
- “Pump Boys and Dinettes,” Upper Room Dinner Theatre. Limited number of tickets available for the popular dinner theatre, located on the second floor of Martin Hall on the University of Mobile campus. - “StarLight at the University of Mobile,” an outdoor concert featuring a variety of ensembles from the University of Mobile Center for Performing Arts and a guest artist, will be held April 10 on the lawn in front of Martin Hall, University of Mobile campus, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Free. - The UM Opera Workshop will present Mozart’s “The Magic Flute” in English translation, April 20 and 21. Times and location to be announced.
