Miss University of Mobile 2009 Crowned
Kylie Watkins of Trussville, Ala., was crowned Miss University of Mobile 2009 on Saturday, Jan. 31. She will compete in the Miss Alabama Pageant on June 3-6 in Birmingham. The winner of the Miss Alabama Pageant will then compete in the Miss America Pageant 2009. Watkins received a one year, full tuition scholarship valued at $13,500, an allowance of $1000 for wardrobe, and an additional $2,500 worth of prizes. Along with her crown, Watkins won the swimsuit competition, earning her an additional $200 in scholarship money. She was also awarded “People’s Choice Award” by her peers and faculty who attended the event. ”Of course I felt overwhelmed, shocked and excited! Most importantly, I felt privileged that God would trust me with such a tremendous responsibility,” said Watkins about being crowned Miss UM 2009. Watkins, the daughter of Tom and Ann Watkins, is a sophomore majoring in elementary education. As Miss University of Mobile 2009, Watkins plans to promote her platform that strongly encourages abstinence until marriage. “As Miss UM 2009, I will seek God’s will by serving others and promoting my platform of abstinence. I also want students to know that through my reign as Miss UM, I will act as their voice and speak out about their concerns and ideas,” she said. Miss University of Mobile serves as the official hostess of the university. Her responsibilities include participation in alumni activities, homecoming, dedications, receptions, and various community and student events. “I hope to develop deep, life-long friendships with the students while serving as their official ambassador, representative and friend. Being named Miss UM 2009 was certainly not in my plans for life, but thankfully God’s plan for me is better than anything I could have imagined,” said Watkins about her upcoming year as Miss University of Mobile. Other winners in the Miss University of Mobile 2009 pageant include: Paige McCauley of Montgomery Ala., freshman elementary education major, was awarded Miss Congeniality and was honored with a $200 scholarship. She is the daughter of Yvonne McCauley and the late Michael McCauley. By Sarah Rouss, senior, communication
