University of Mobile Concert features ‘American Sound’ 

SmallThe Center of Performing Arts at the University of Mobile is hosting a musical event entitled “American Sound” featuring the works of American composers. Soprano Dr. Allanda Small, assistant professor of music at the University of Mobile, will perform a vocal recital featuring the music of George Gershwin, H. Leslie Adams, Amy Beach, Edwin Penhorwood and Cole Porter. Christopher Lovely, adjunct instructor of piano, will accompany Small. 

The event will take place Friday, Jan. 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Moorer Auditorium in Martin Hall at the University of Mobile. Admission is free. For more information, call (251) 442-2897.  

Small is a versatile and passionate performer who has performed lead and supporting roles in the operas “The Tender Land,” “Le Nozze di Figaro,” and “Susannah.”She is a past winner of the William T. Gower scholarship competition, Metropolitan Opera National Council Regional Auditions (New Orleans District), and the Governor’s Award at the Mississippi division of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition.  In 2005, she toured Spain with Triumph Chorale as a soloist and chorale member.  

Small was named a state winner in the NATSAA Young Artist Competition and placed first in the NATS Regional Competition. Recent stage credits include the role of Micaela in “Carmen” with the Southern Opera and Musical Theatre Company, Leonora in “Il Trovatore,” Suzel inL'Amico Fritz,”and Madame Pompous in “Too Many Sopranos,” all for the Southern Vocal Arts Society's Opera Scene Program.  

Small holds a doctorate of musical arts in vocal performance from The University of Southern Mississippi.
