New Project Lab Dedicated
and Available for Computer Tutoring

Summers and Denton

The University of Mobile’s chapter of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) held a dedication ceremony for the new ACM Project Lab in Samford Hall on July 18.

According to UM’s ACM student president Wesley Summers, ACM is “an international scientific and educational organization dedicated to advancing the arts, sciences, and applications of information technology.”

Director of Campus Ministries Neal Ledbetter led a prayer in dedication for the new computer lab, located on the second floor of Samford Hall. UM’s ACM advisor Leo Denton said members of the club wanted to dedicate the room to God and pray for the students who would use the lab. He also said he was hopeful it would “provide excitement for students who are at UM now, and students who are coming.”

The ACM Project Lab houses four computers, which have access to the internet and a virtual network. ACM members will use the lab to participate in regional and national conferences, and provide free Computer Information Systems tutoring and simple tech support for UM students during open lobby hours.

Denton, also assistant professor of CIS, said members of ACM want to “use the physical space of the facility for enhancing academics” at UM, and for students to feel welcome in the lab.

Summers, a junior from Elkmont, Ala., said benefits of UM’s ACM membership include attending monthly meetings, listening to educational speakers, networking events, weekly socials and networking with professionals, as well as other resources. UM’s chapter of ACM offers free membership to all majors. National ACM student dues are $20.
