M-FUGE Student receives
Gena Thompson of Bogue Chitto, Miss., a senior at Enterprise High School, was recently awarded the first of eight $20,000 M-Fuge scholarships to be awarded by the University of Mobile this summer. The scholarship was a surprise to Thompson, who recently spent a week at the college with fellow members of Wellman Church as a participant in M-Fuge, a summer camp sponsored by the Southern Baptist Convention. Thompson is the daughter of Stacey Thompson of Bogue Chitto, Miss. Each summer M-Fuge campers, grades 7 through college, travel to eight different sites across the nation and three sites internationally. Campers go out into the community and volunteer in construction, painting, yard work, vacation Bible schools, social ministries and more. Kim Leousis, vice president for enrollment management at the University of Mobile, said the Baptist college appreciates the hard work M-Fuge campers provide in the south Alabama community and wanted to find a way to reward them. She also said that UM wants to recruit students of the same caliber as the students who attend M-Fuge. “One of the purposes of M-Fuge is to expose students to hands-on community service. As a college, we believe community service is a cornerstone of our student life. We think it’s very important to recruit students with that mindset and encourage them to attend UM,” said Leousis. During the campers’ week at UM, every high school student who shows interest in the university is asked to fill out an information card. At the end of the week, a name is drawn from all the completed information cards, and one student goes home with a $20,000 scholarship offer, $5,000 renewable each year. This summer the University of Mobile will award $160,000 in M-Fuge scholarships. For more information about the University of Mobile, log onto the website at www.umobile.edu.
