University of Mobile Faculty, Staff Receive Prestigious Megginson Awards,
Promotions, Service Awards
 

University of Mobile faculty and staff received special recognition for contributions to their professions during the annual faculty and staff luncheon. UM President Dr. Mark Foley presented the awards during the annual event, as well as a special gift of historic photographs of the university to founding president and current chancellor Dr. William K. Weaver Jr.  

Dr. Thomas Bevill, professor of marriage and family counseling and Christian studies, received the William A. Megginson Teaching Award for excellence in classroom instruction and scholarly activity.

Bevill, who has taught at UM for 17 years, received his bachelor of science from the University of Southern Mississippi and his master in religious education and doctorate from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.

Dr. Douglas Mitchell, associate professor of English and director of the UM Honors Program, received the Mitford Ray Megginson Research Award in recognition of outstanding research and professional achievement.

Mitchell, who has taught at UM for eight years, received his bachelor of arts from Louisiana State University and his master of arts and doctorate from the University of North Carolina.

Cindy Godwin, administrative assistant in the College of Arts and Sciences, received the Emma Frances Megginson Service Award. This award is presented to a full-time employee who exhibits excellence in service and promoting the philosophy of the university by being identifiably Christian, and contributing to campus and community life. Godwin has served at UM for more than six years.

The awards were made possible through the W.A. Megginson Foundation. This organization was founded by the Rev. Megginson, his two brothers, Leon and Ted, and sister Anne Frances Sinclair, in order to further Christian education.

Foley announced the following promotions:

    • Dr. Lonnie Burnett, from associate professor to professor of history
    • Dr. Patrick Jacobs, from assistant professor to associate professor in the Center for Performing Arts
    • Dr. Douglas Mitchell, from assistant professor to associate professor of English
    • Dr. Richard McElhaney, from assistant professor to associate professor of nursing

Professor medallions, which are worn during graduation ceremonies, were presented to Drs. Patricia Cooper, Robert Doan and Lonnie Burnett.

Service awards were presented to the following faculty and staff in recognition of their years of service to the university.
