Miss UM Pageant Named Outstanding Small Preliminary in Alabama
And the winner is…the Miss University of Mobile Pageant! The University of Mobile’s Miss UM Pageant was named the 2009 Outstanding Small School Preliminary for the Miss Alabama Pageant during the state pageant finals on June 6. Miss University of Mobile 2009 Kylie Watkins received $1,600 in scholarships during the Miss Alabama Pageant, held June 3-6 in Birmingham, Ala., in the Wright Center on the campus of Samford University. Watkins competed in interview, talent, swimsuit, evening gown and on-stage question. Her community service platform promoted abstinence. She is a junior majoring in elementary education and a member of the elite RamCorps precision drum and brass performing ensemble in the university’s Center for Performing Arts. Also, the 2007 Miss University of Mobile, Jaye Herrod, competed as Miss Smiths Station 2009 in the state preliminary for the Miss America Pageant. Herrod won a non-finalist talent award, was a top seven community service finalist, and received $2,100 in scholarships. She is a 2009 graduate with a bachelor’s degree in music education. “Receiving this award from the Miss Alabama Pageant is a wonderful compliment to the many volunteers who work countless hours throughout the year to put together a quality program. The Miss UM Pageant is one of the university's favorite traditions because it empowers young women to grow individually and to make a difference in our community while providing them with scholarship money,” said Allison Miller, director of the Miss UM Pageant and a 2001 graduate of the Christian university. Committee members responsible for the award-winning Miss UM 2009 pageant include UM graduates Kelly Jo Hollingsworth, Hali Givens, Mary Shirey, Marty Pittman and Shannon Simmons Locklear; also Marilyn Foley and Cindy Godwin. UM students who volunteered with the pageant include: Kristin Oliver, stage manager; Megan Hunter, Freshman Forum coordinator; Morgan Carnley, public relations coordinator; and Jenna Housh, choreographer. The Miss University of Mobile Pageant is a local preliminary of the Miss America Organization, one of the nation's leading achievement programs and the world's largest provider of scholarship assistance for young women. Last year, the Miss America Organization and its state and local organizations made available more than $45 million in cash and scholarship assistance. Last modified :
