University of Mobile Extends Fall Semester Registration to Assist Students Impacted by Hurricane Katrina The University of Mobile has extended its fall semester registration deadline to assist students displaced from colleges and universities impacted by Hurricane Katrina, according to UM President Mark Foley. The registration deadline has been extended to Friday, Sept. 9. Students may contact the Registrar's Office at 251-442-2536 or toll-free at 1-800-946-7267 beginning Tuesday, Sept. 6. "We urge students who find themselves displaced by Hurricane Katrina to call us regarding options for financial aid and enrolling," Foley said. He said university officials will work with students on a case-by-case basis to help them continue their education during this transition time. Fall semester at the private Christian university had barely begun when Hurricane Katrina forced the closing of campus after just three days of classes. The university was closed for one week until power could be restored. Residence halls will open at noon on Monday, Sept. 5, and classes resume Tuesday, Sept. 6. All UM athletic events are cancelled until Tuesday, Sept. 6. The University of Mobile is located in north Mobile County and offers undergraduate and graduate degrees through the College of Arts and Sciences and the schools of business, Christian studies, education, leadership development and nursing. Approximately 1,800 students enroll annually at the school, which is affiliated with the Alabama Baptist State Convention.
