University of Mobile Business Students Ranked 3rd in Online Global Business Strategy Competition
Three University of Mobile business students are currently tied for third place among 3,712 teams worldwide in the Business Strategy Game online competition. The team from UM consists of business administration major Morgan Copes of Carenco, La.; accounting and psychology major Renee Hudson of Palatka, Fla.; and business administration major Lauren Burnett of Saraland, Ala. The BSG-Online program, also know as the Business Strategy Game, is a computer simulation software that involves teams from 233 colleges and universities world wide. When using this online exercise, members of the classroom divide into teams and are then assigned the task of running an athletic footwear company in a head-to-head competition against the other companies managed by their classmates and peers worldwide. Each Monday of the starting week, BSG-Online compiles a list of the prior week’s best-performing companies worldwide based on each of four measures: overall score, earnings per share, return on average equity, and stock price.
The UM students created FTeam Shoes Inc. and first made the Global Top 100 during the week of Feb. 16-22 with an overall ranking of ninth. During the week of Feb. 23-March 1, the team tied for third place overall. Kathy Dunning, assistant professor and chair of the University of Mobile Department of Accounting, uses the BSG-0nline program to prepare her students for the business world. Dunning said she accomplishes this by using all aspects of manufacturing that are based on selling athletic footwear that mirror the real-world market. Her students are engaged in controlling the cost of production, outsourcing, cost of capital, pricing, and product promotion. “This ranking speaks very highly of this group of students. Considering how many universities across the world participated in this same business scenario, I am impressed with the caliber of students that can successfully compete ‘toe-to-toe’ with other students from universities with highly recognized business programs,” said Dunning. The University of Mobile is a Christian university offering more than 40 areas of study in the College of Arts and Sciences; schools of business, Christian studies, education and nursing; Center for Performing Arts; Center for Adult Programs; and graduate school.
