Vocal students from the University of Mobile Center for Performing Arts will perform Giacchino Rossini’s opera in Italian. They will be accompanied by an orchestra composed of university students and professional musicians. Reserved seating tickets are $20 for adults and $10 for students, and group ticket rates are available. For reserved seating, call the UM Opera Theater at (251) 442-2554. Tickets are also available at the door. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday, April 17 and 2 p.m. Sunday, April 19 at the Chickasaw Civic Theater, 801 Iroquois St. in Chickasaw, Ala. Guest conductor Stone is music director of the University of Delaware Orchestra and holds both master’s and doctoral degrees in conducting from Peabody Conservatory. He has conducted the Spokane Symphony, the Fort Wayne Philharmonic, the Savaria, Hungary Symphony and the Baltimore Symphony, among many others. Dr. Patrick Jacobs, associate professor of music and director of vocal studies at the University of Mobile Center for Performing Arts, will direct the production. “It’s the most challenging work that we’ve tackled here, and it’s been a great learning experience for everyone. This piece demands virtuosity, and the students are doing a great job of rising to the task,” said Jacobs. Jacobs, a baritone who performs with the Mobile and Pensacola operas as well as throughout the United States, said “The Barber of Seville is hilarious, and has some of the most beautiful music that has been written for the stage. “Count Almaviva has fallen in love with the beautiful Rosina, and the plot revolves around him trying to pry her away from her guardian, who wants to keep her for himself. With the help of Figaro, comic disguises, and clever scheming, he succeeds.” The Opera Theater is one of 21 musical ensembles in the UM Center for Performing Arts, which includes approximately 250 college students who major or minor in music or theatre at the Christian university.
