OUTSTANDING FACULTY AND STAFF RECEIVE PRESTIGIOUS AWARDS

University of Mobile faculty and staff members received special recognition for contributions to their professions May 1 during the annual faculty and staff spring luncheon.

Dr. Larry Turner, professor of education, received the William A. Megginson Teaching Award for excellence in classroom teaching and scholarly activity, and for his contributions to campus and community life.

Turner, who has taught at UM for nearly eight years, received a bachelor of science and a master of arts in secondary education from the University of Alabama, and received his master’s of education and educational doctorate from Harvard University.

Ms. Pamela Buchanan, director of student services for the Center for Adult Programs and assistant professor of general studies, received the Mitford Ray Megginson Research Award for her involvement in research activities.

Buchanan, who has taught at UM for 15 years, received her bachelor of arts in journalism and her master of arts in English from Southwest Texas State University and is participating in her doctoral studies at the University of South Alabama.

Her research project is entitled “Effects of Analogy-Enhanced Grammar Instruction on Performance and Motivation in College Students.” It contributes to a better understanding of the learning process among adult students. Her research evaluates instructional techniques appropriate for adult learners.

Mrs. Cindy Bruns, student relations supervisor in enrollment services, received the Emma Frances Megginson Service Award. This award is presented to a full-time employee who exhibits excellence in promoting the philosophy of the university, excellence in performing responsibilities, and excellence in contributing to campus and community life.

Bruns, who has worked at UM for nearly eight years, is a graduate of Moultrie High School in Charleston, S.C.

The Spirit of Influence Award was presented to Mr. Nick Cillo, assistant professor of management and finance, for his positive influence during students’ study sessions. Cillo founded “Up All Night,” an all-night event that allows students to study for final exams in a central location. He also attended the evening sessions and cooked food for the students.

Cillo has worked at UM for nearly 12 years. He received his bachelor of science in education from Duquesne University and his master of business administration from Long Island University.

The Megginson awards were made possible through the W.A. Megginson Foundation. This organization was founded by the Rev. Mitford Ray Megginson and his two brothers, Leon and Ted, and sister, Annie Frances Sinclair, in order to further Christian education. The Spirit of Influence Award was made possible by a donation from Mike Blaylock, vice president for campus affairs, who contributed proceeds from the sale of his book, “Life-Changing Leadership: Making a Difference in the Lives of Others.”
