UM Prof to Share Storm-chasing
University of Mobile Associate Professor of Biology Steve Carey is chronicling his storm-chasing trips in America’s Tornado Alley on the university’s website at www.umobile.edu/stormchaser. Carey, who has participated in several storm-chasing trips in recent years, is leading trips during the first two weeks of May for Stormchasing Adventure Tours. He serves as a guide and driver in a chase vehicle traveling the Great Plains from North Dakota to Texas. “It is always a pleasure to help other people experience one of the most awe-inspiring sights this planet has to offer,” he wrote in his first online posting. He noted that powerful tornadoes, while awe-inspiring, can inflict terrible damage. “Storm chasing, to me, is not a thrill-seek activity and should never be undertaken by those unfamiliar with the behavior of severe storms. I enjoy the science behind the chase and the challenge of trying to predict if and where supercell storms will likely form,” Carey wrote. In addition to storm chasing, Carey has authored several science textbooks and written papers on cave fauna and Alabama reptiles and amphibians. He also speaks to high school and community groups about the sciences; and teaches biology, ecology, environmental science and botany, among other topics, at UM.
