VOICES of Mobile to Tour Holy Land, Perform at Southern Baptist Convention Pastor’s Conference

The University of Mobile elite vocal ensemble, VOICES of Mobile, is spreading the message of Jesus Christ through song this summer in places ranging from the Jordan River in Israel to the Southern Baptist Convention Pastor’s Conference in Louisville, Ky.

The 16-member premiere vocal ensemble will travel to Tel Aviv, Israel on June 2, return to the United States on June 17 by way of Paris, France, then cap off the tour at the SBC Pastor’s Conference June 21-22.

Along the way, the group will present impromptu open-air concerts at historic Christian sites in Jerusalem and Jordan, sing at schools and churches in the Holy Land, and perform at the Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, France.

“It’s a musical, educational and spiritual experience,” said Dr. Al Miller, associate dean of the UM Center for Performing Arts. “No doubt, it is music missions, because we are using our God-given talents to share the gospel through music. In addition, the educational and spiritual experience is simply immeasurable. To see the Middle East, to trace the footsteps of Jesus from Bethlehem to Calvary, this is where the Bible comes alive.”

Miller said previous international tours by the Christian university’s music program have included Germany and other European nations. This first tour of the Middle East was organized by UM Board of Trustee member Gabi Constantine.

“At the age of seven I visited the Holy Land and, even at such a young age, that trip had a profound impact on my life. I am certain that this trip will have a similar effect on our students. This is the reason I wanted to organize the trip.” Constantine said.

In Israel, the group will perform concerts at two churches in Jerusalem, one church in Ramallah, and a high school in Nazareth. In Jordan, they will perform concerts at two churches in Amman and one concert at a civic center that will be open to the public, Constantine said.

The return trip to the United States will include a stop in Paris, France. VOICES will perform an a cappella concert of classical choral literature in the Notre Dame Cathedral on June 16 at 11:30 a.m.

VOICES of Mobile is among 21 performing ensembles at the Christian university’s Center for Performing Arts, which is under the direction of Roger Breland, a member of the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and founder/director for 31 years of the internationally acclaimed contemporary Christian group TRUTH.

“These men and women are some of the most talented collegiate young professional musicians in America,” Breland said.

VOICES of Mobile has performed Christmas concerts at the White House for four consecutive years and presents more than 100 concerts each year. Currently, the group is concluding its concert tour of churches and schools in Alabama, Florida, Louisiana and Georgia.

A new CD titled “All the Way Up” includes songs performed on their summer tour and is available for $10 from the UM Center for Performing Arts. To order a VOICES CD, call (251) 442-2420 or email Jessica Henderson at jessicah@umobile.edu.
