University of Mobile Students Inducted into National Honor Society Alpha Chi National Honor Society at the University of Mobile inducted 27 students on Oct. 29 in the Harrigan Forest Learning Center on campus. Alpha Chi is a coeducational society that promotes and honors academic excellence among college and university students. Membership is granted according to academic achievement, and members are drawn from the top 10 percent of the junior and senior classes. Alpha Chi was founded in 1922 and was installed at the University of Mobile in 1978. Juniors inducted into Alpha Chi were Hannah Akridge of Tibbie, Ala.; Ashley Broadus of Grove Hill, Ala.; Glen Brown and Mary-Claire Byrd, both of Mobile, Ala.; Benjamin Dorman of Tullahoma, Tenn.; Theresa Forbes and Jaye Herrod, both of Prattville, Ala.; Gregory Howell of Chuncula, Ala.; Tina Landrum of Citronelle, Ala.; Cheree Melton of Adger, Ala.; Ashley Murphy of Atmore, Ala.; Eric Murphy of Semmes, Ala.; Laura Phillips of Loxley, Ala.; Taylor Phillips of Decatur, Ala.; and Hannah Shetler of Lakeside, Mont. Seniors inducted into Alpha Chi were Wesley Bates of Bay Minette, Ala.; Victoria Bosarge of Theodore, Ala.; Nancy Kelley of Eagle River, Alaska; Mona Lusk of Atmore, Ala.; Ginger Reeser of Monticello, Ill.; and Reeda Taylor of Mobile, Ala. Students inducted from the Graduate program were DeLoris Fields of Semmes, Ala.; Eric Foster of Eight Mile, Ala.; Tammye Harvey of Chatom, Ala.; Geraldine Hicks of Mobile, Ala.; and Tonya Williams of Citronelle, Ala. The officers presiding at the ceremony were Caitlin Early, president; Ashley Broadus, vice president; Mary-Claire Byrd, secretary; Beth Stanley, treasurer; and Doug Corburn, Student Government Association representative. Faculty sponsors include Professor of Biology Dr. Elizabeth French, Dean of the School of Nursing Dr. Elizabeth Flanagan, and Department of Sociology Chair Dr. Garrison Thompson. According to Dr. French, members may apply for special scholarships, may attend national and regional conventions, and are eligible for certain step promotions in federal jobs. The members also plan various activities, including often having a noted speaker for the spring semester. At graduation, members receive cords to wear and a certificate.
