UM School of Nursing Grads
Show Excellent Passing Rate

Recent graduates of the University of Mobile School of Nursing had excellent passing rates on the NCLEX, or National Council Licensure Examination, according to Dr. Elizabeth Flanagan, dean of the School of Nursing.

Flanagan said UM graduates in the associate degree in nursing program scored a 95 percent passing rate, while students in the bachelor of science in nursing program scored a 92 percent passing rate.

The high scores earned praise from UM President Dr. Mark Foley.

“The university can be proud of these men and women who are offering outstanding care and comfort to people in a variety of healthcare settings,” Foley said.

Flanagan said 19 of the 20 A.D.N. graduates taking the national licensure exam passed, while 22 of the 24 B.S.N. graduates taking the test passed. Students taking the exams graduated from UM in December 2006 or May 2007 and would have taken the licensure exam between October 2006 and September 2007.

Flanagan said the curriculum in both programs emphasize critical thinking skills and problem solving – skills that are tested both on the NCLEX and in real-life on-the-job situations.

“Our faculty members are professionals who know what it takes to succeed in the medical field, and they take a personal pride in the success of their students both on this national test and in their careers,” Flanagan said.

She said the curriculum emphasizes active learning on the part of students instead of being heavily lecture-based.

“It’s less lecture and more case studies and other teaching strategies that emphasize application of content, instead of simply memorizing facts,” she said. “The result is a graduate who is highly capable and prepared to make a positive difference in the healthcare field.”
