University of Mobile Chamber Orchestra
Community Concert Set for October 18

University students, faculty and guest musicians of the University of Mobile Chamber Orchestra will perform in a free community concert at 7 p.m. on Oct. 18 at College Park Baptist Church, 5860 College Parkway across from the UM campus. The concert will be conducted by guest conductor Jeffery A. Reed and will showcase two new University of Mobile professors, Allanda Small and Mihaela Buhaiciuc.

Reed is the music director and conductor of the Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra and the Sea Islands Symphony which performs concerts in the Charleston, South Carolina area. He has guest conducted numerous symphonies and was the first American to conduct the Buan Sinfonietta of Busan, South Korea in May 2007.

Allanda Small, a soprano, is assistant professor of music. She holds a doctorate of musical arts in vocal performance from the University of Southern Mississippi and has performed lead and supporting roles in several operas. Small is the winner of several competitions such as the William T. Gower scholarship competition, Metropolitan Opera National Council Regional Auditions, the Governor’s Award at the Mississippi division of the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition, was named the state winner in the NATSAA Young Artist Competition and placed first in the NATS Regional Competition.

Mihaela Buhaiciuc, a soprano, is assistant professor of music, and is a cum laude graduate of Brasov Music Conservatory. She holds a bachelor of music and master of music degrees from State University of New York at Stony Brook and is currently working toward her doctor of musical arts, also from SUNY at Stony Brook. The native of Romania has performed with the Stony Brook Opera and the South Florida Lyric Opera, among others. Buhaiciuc has been selected as a member of the Romanian Fulbright Alumni Association of the National Association of Teachers of Singing and was a writer for Brasov Musical Magazine.
