UM Reading Council Honored by International Reading Association

The University of Mobile Reading Council has been designated an “Honor Council” by the International Reading Association. Dr. Mary Michael Campbell, president of the Alabama Reading Association, presented the recognition to UM Reading Council President Stephanie Barnes and congratulated students, faculty and staff during a UM Reading Council meeting Sept. 14.

Also, Christian author Beth White discussed the process of writing and publishing Christian novels during the meeting, which was held at the Oakdale Center on the university campus.

To be designated an honor council, the UM Reading Council increased membership and planned and implemented programs that enhance the knowledge of teaching reading, writing and poetry. During the past academic year, the UM Reading Council and university organizations SLATE and Kappa Delta Pi sponsored seminars on teaching children in poverty and on making history come alive.

In addition, the UM chapters provided monogrammed tote bags with school supplies for student teachers, and held a drive for new and gently used books for children.

The UM Reading Council also joined with the Metro-Mobile Reading Council in sponsoring a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday that focused on family reading time.

Dr. Cynthia Biegler, professor of education, is faculty advisor to the UM Reading Council. For more information, contact the UM School of Education at (251) 442-2356.
