John Ellis "Jeb" Bush served as the 43rd governor of Florida from Jan. 5, 1999 to Jan. 2, 2007, and was the first Republican to be re-elected to that office.

A native of Texas, he graduated magna cum laude from the University of Texas with a bachelor of arts degree in Latin American studies. In 1973, he married Columba, a native of Mexico. They now have three children.

As governor, Bush provided substantial, broad-based tax relief and economic incentives to strengthen and diversify the state's economy. He also greatly increased student achievement by revolutionizing Florida's education system. Bush maintained high approval ratings throughout his tenure.

The University of Mobile Scholarship Banquet previously brought speakers such as former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich, and former Georgia governor and retired U.S. Sen. Zell Miller. The patriotic event touches on themes of leadership, service and the importance of graduating men and women who are prepared to make a difference in their communities and the world.
