Understanding the Flat Rate Tuition System

What is flat rate tuition?
Flat rate tuition means that you will pay a flat rate for taking 12-17 hours per semester rather than paying a per hour rate as before. The flat rate price for 12-17 hours will be $6,000 per semester for the 2006/07 academic year.

Why did the University of Mobile move to a flat rate pricing system?
Many colleges and universities are moving to this flat rate pricing system in order to simplify the process of estimating your tuition expenses. This system will also ease the financial strain on students who would like to take more hours in order to graduate on time, but wouldn't do so otherwise because more hours would cost more money. This system will allow you to take up to 17 hours at the same price as 12 hours
(17 = full load of 15 hours plus two labs).

What if I take more than 17 hours?
If you take more than 17 hours, you will pay the base flat rate of $6,000 plus $380 per hour over 17 hours. For example, if you take 18 hours, you will pay $6,380 ($6,000 + $380).

What if I want to take less than 12 hours?
If you take less than 12 hours per semester, you will pay $420 per hour rather than the flat rate.

What if I only need 12 hours to graduate?
You will pay the 12-17 hour flat rate of $6,000.

How many hours should I take in order to get the most for my tuition payment?
The optimum number of hours in the flat rate tuition system is 18 and higher.

How will this impact my financial aid?
For most students, this pricing change will not affect your financial aid. All students, however, are encouraged to use a new service called the "1-2-1 Session." This new service is a one-on-one financial planning session with a counselor who will guide you through the process of seeking financial assistance. To schedule an appointment for a 1-2-1 Session, you may call or email the financial aid office at 442-2239 or askfinancialaid@mail.umobile.edu. These sessions typically take 20-30 minutes and will include:

  1. Reviewing your current financial aid package
  2. Estimating your costs for next year
  3. Outlining steps and a time line needed to complete the financial aid process
  4. Exploring payment plans and additional financial options for next year
