COURSE SELECTION
There should be careful selection of the number of courses taken and the workload of the courses within each semester.  Your advisor can help you select the most appropriate coursework.

ACADEMIC BANKRUPTCY FOR UNIVERSITY OF MOBILE CREDITS
The University of Mobile will permit a student to apply for academic bankruptcy after an absence of three or more calendar years for the purpose of omitting all grades and credits earned at the University. The academic affairs committee must approve the written request for academic bankruptcy before or at the beginning of the first academic period (semester) of reenrollment.

If bankruptcy is approved, all prior grades and credits earned at the University of Mobile will be omitted from the GPA calculations and will not count toward graduation requirements. A student may request
academic bankruptcy only once during his or her academic career at the University of Mobile. The student's choice of catalogs is limited to the one in effect at the time that he or she declares academic bankruptcy or any future catalog published during his or her enrollment at the University of Mobile as long as the catalog is not more than six years old.

ACADEMIC BANKRUPTCY FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS
The University of Mobile will honor academic bankruptcy granted by another accredited institution of higher education, provided that an official transcript from the granting institution documents the bankruptcy. The transcript documenting academic bankruptcy should be received prior to admission to the University. All grades for the bankruptcy period are omitted from the calculation of GPA.

Note: Academic bankruptcy does not remove obligation of the student for financial aid received for those courses.

ADVISORS
All entering students are assigned to academic advisors in their major areas of study. Advisement and counseling sessions usually occur before registration, after grades are received, during degree planning, and at other times as requested by either the student or advisor. All students are strongly encouraged to consult frequently with their advisors. Selection of a major, long-term career goals, educational problems, and questions about additional educational opportunities are among the topics students should discuss with advisors.

Advisors monitor and assist students throughout their college careers at the University of Mobile.
Although faculty and staff can provide valuable assistance and guidance for students, the ultimate responsibility for devising appropriate schedules, meeting degree and program requirements, and complying with all academic regulations belongs to the student.  Therefore, students must be familiar with the University’s requirements, their major and other program requirements, the catalog, and their own academic transcripts.

THE LEARNING CENTER
The Learning Center at the University of Mobile is located in the J. L. Bedsole Library in Room 102. The Learning Center is under the direction of a director and is staffed by students who have been trained to work with their peers. The Learning Center is an academic support program for all University of Mobile students. This free service is available for students who need supplementary instruction in writing, grammar, or mathematics. The best way to make an appointment is to come by the center or speak with your advisor for a referral for specific services.

MAJOR SELECTION
Selecting a major can be a difficult decision. It is important to take your time selecting a major so you can consider your personal goals, your educational goals, and your career goals. If you are still deciding which major would best fit you, we offer the following suggestions:

  • An excellent way to get a taste of our many academic programs is through the general education requirements. General education courses can help you develop a better feel for which major will be most effective in helping you accomplish your goals.
  • Use the general education requirements to explore areas of interest to you. Then talk with your advisor and/or instructors to find out more about the fields you enjoy.
  • Set up an appointment with the Counselor at UM's Student Success Center and learn what assessments can help you narrow down your choices.
  • Your academic advisor, who assists you in schedule planning and class registration, will also help you choose a major. By working together, you and your advisor will define interest and choose the program that closely matches them.
