Resume Writing 101

Three main types of resumes:

  • The chronological resume - work history in reverse chronological order
  • The functional resume - summary of experience (use with caution)
  • The combination resume - both work history and experience

 

Five components of a resume:

  • Heading: Your name, address, telephone number, etc.
  • Objective (optional): A statement that briefly spells out the type of position or opportunity you are looking for
  • Summary (optional): Two or three sentences that sum up key elements of your background, skills, and attributes
  • Experience: Can also be described as professional experience or work experience, a summary of the jobs you've held and the general responsibilities and duties performed in those jobs
  • Education: Your educational credentials: colleges or universities attended, degrees earned,etc.

Five tips for better resume writing

  • Avoid the first person pronoun.
  • Keep sentences short.
  • Use plain English.
  • Use bullet statements when appropriate
  • Go from general to specific when sequencing information
