The University of Mobile Student Success Center exists to serve the UM student community through support and guidance in the areas of individual and relationship counseling, career exploration, new student orientation, and academic and interpersonal skill-building.

The staff of the SSC desire to connect students and parents with resources that will encourage academic, personal, and spiritual growth not just through college but for a lifetime.

  Shirley Sutterfield is the Director of Student Retention. She has worked at the University of Mobile for 14 years. She received her B.S. Degree in Organizational and Administrative Leadership and her M.A. Degree in Marriage and Family Counseling, both from the University of Mobile.
  Meaghan McGuire is the University Counselor at the Student Success Center. She received her B.A. Degree in Christian Studies from the University of Mobile. The Learning Connection

  • Freshman Seminar is a program offered for first-time freshmen here at UM. As a freshman, you will have the opportunity to attend seminars designed to connect you with valuable information and resources necessary for beginning a successful college career. You and your RAM FAM members will journey through this seminar together along with your faculty mentor who will help guide you through your first semester as a UM student.
  • The SSC can help you improve your study skills and test taking skills. To make an appointment, call 442-2292. If you need tutoring in any subject, call the Learning Center located in the Bedsole Library at 442-2377.

The Deeper Connection

  • The Student Success Center at the University of Mobile is committed to providing you with support and guidance as you journey through the ups and downs of college life. Whether your concerns are with your challenging relationships with parents and friends or with class and work responsibilities, the Student Success Center is a safe place for you to come for support and guidance.
  • For parents and students looking for more info about how to get the most out of the college experience, the SSC provides a connection to online resources for exploring the world of college and work. With informative articles, helpful links, and email connections to SSC staff, parents and students can stay connected with success at UM.
  • We know you work hard to have good relationships with your family and friends. So when you have a question or need more information about resolving conflicts, or dealing with depression, addiction, or relationship issues, connect with the SSC staff for personal counseling. Appointments can be made at the SSC office.

The Career Connection

  • The SSC offers career guidance and exploration for all UM students. Whether you are a new student at UM and would like to learn more about the career choices available to you, or a graduating senior with a resume to prepare, the SSC offers you one-on-one consultations designed to fit your needs. With a wide variety of resources and inventories available, the SSC plans to connect you with the tools for success both here at UM and in the world of work.
  • Looking for work? The SSC offers UM students and alumni career placement support through providing access to local and regional job opportunities. Get connected with your career through the SSC!
  • For graduating seniors, the SSC offers resume writing, interviewing skills, and individual consultations.
  • When it comes to relationships and the workplace, many young professionals want more information about how to create and maintain healthy patterns of relating and communicating with employers and colleagues. The SSC offers personal counseling for UM students who are interested in learning more about social skills and the workplace.
